Calculate a Percentage

The percentage can be calculated by dividing the value by the total value and then multiplying the result by 100. The formula used to calculate percentage is: (value/total value)×100%.

Worked example

In this example, we will calculate the percentage of students who walk to school. The date below shows the results of a survey of 50 students based on how they travel to school.

Walk – 39

Cycle – 3

Car – 6

Bus – 2

We are going to calculate the percentage of students who walk to school. To do this we must divide 39 by 50. Then multiply it by 100.

39 / 50= 0.78

0.78 x 100 = 78%
