Destructive plate margins

Destructive or convergent plate margins form when two tectonic plates collide.

Oceanic-continental destructive plate margins

Where oceanic and continental crust collide, the denser, heavier oceanic crust subducts the continental crust.

Oceanic-oceanic destructive plate margins

Where two oceanic crusts collide, the older, colder and denser oceanic crust subducts the younger crust.

Continental-continental destructive plate margins

When two continental tectonic plates converge, they cannot submerge into the mantle due to their composition. This lack of subduction leads to the plates crumpling upwards, forming fold mountains like the Himalayas.
