What is a natural hazard?

A natural hazard is an extreme natural event that has the potential to cause harm to people, property, and the environment. It becomes a hazard only when it threatens to impact areas where people live or work. Natural hazards can range from tectonic events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to climatological occurrences like droughts and heatwaves.
