Where do droughts happen?

Droughts commonly occur in:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Particularly in the Sahel and countries like Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan.
  • Australia: Especially in the interior regions and parts of the eastern and western coasts.
  • Western United States: States like California, Arizona, and Nevada frequently experience drought conditions.

Arid Regions are particularly vulnerable to drought, including:

  • Australia: Especially in the interior regions and parts of the eastern and western coasts.
  • Arabian Peninsula: This includes countries like Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman.
  • Atacama Desert: Located in Chile, one of Earth’s driest places.

Droughts also occur in unexpected places, including:

  • United Kingdom: Although known for its wet climate, parts of the UK, especially the southeast, can experience droughts during particularly dry summers.
  • Amazon Rainforest: Normally a very wet region, but can experience drought during certain climatic events like El Niño.
  • Southern Europe: Countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece can experience droughts, particularly in the summer months.
