Internet Geography Summer Challenge 3 2025

Plan the ultimate no-fly adventure!

In this challenge, you’re going to plan an epic journey through at least six countries — but there’s a twist. You’re not allowed to fly! Instead, you’ll be using trains, buses, ferries, bikes, and your feet to travel as far as you can in 10 days with a budget of £1500.

This activity will test your geography, budgeting, research, and route-planning skills. Ready to race across the world?

What You Need to Do

  1. Start from your nearest UK town or city.
  2. Plan a route that takes you through at least six different countries (excluding the UK).
  3. You must:
    1. Stay at least one night in 3 of those countries
    2. Travel for 7 to 10 days
    3. Keep your total spending under £1500
    4. Not use any flights. Oh, and car hire is not allowed!
  4. Record your daily start and end points, distances travelled, and costs (transport and accommodation).
  5. Calculate your total distance travelled and total spend at the end.
  6. Plot your journey on the provided map and include a key.

Planning Tips

  • Use websites like Rome2Rio, Trainline, FlixBus, and Hostelworld (think cheap and cheerful accommodation – luxury 5-star hotels are out of your budget!) to check real travel routes and prices.
  • Use Google Maps to calculate daily distances.
  • Think about efficient routes — countries with good transport links will help you go further.
  • You could travel through countries like France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, etc.
