What is the range?

The range of a set of data is the difference between the highest and lowest value in a data set.

Calculating the range

The data below shows average temperatures for Manchester, England.

Average temperatures for Manchester

Exam question: Calculate the temperature range for Manchester.

To calculate the range, we need to identify the highest and lowest value.

Highest value = 17.8°C

Lowest value  = 4.3°C

Annual average temperature range = 17.8°C – 4.3°C = 13.5°C

Remember to include the unit of measure in your answer.
